Jesus!

The Meaning of Christmas

It seems like every year I learn something new about Christmas. This year, it’s the concept of “Peace On Earth.” I sang with some friends in a cantata at a rescue mission, and after we were done the preacher got up and said a few words. He explained that the bad news is, there will never be physical peace on earth. And this is true. Countries won’t stop fighting, people won’t stop killing each other, peace will not be achieved, at least until Jesus returns.

Yet, the peace on earth we can have comes from a personal relationship with God. He said, “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” (John 14:27)

So, during Christmas, when we sing and wish and hope for peace on earth, we should really be singing, wishing, and hoping for ourselves and others to realize the inner peace that God gives.

This peace is not of this world. It surpasses our understanding. It’s the reason why non-Christians ask Christians why they are so at peace when a loved one passes away. It’s the reason why some people can praise God in the midst of trials worse than they’ve ever experienced.

I hope you and yours find that peace this Christmas.
